Helping your loved one adjust to a new community

When everyone has finally had the discussion and agreed upon moving your loved one into assisted living but unsure how to help them adjust to their new home?

Here are some helpful hints to help them adapt a little bit easier into their new home.

  1. Try to move their personal items at least a couple of days before and set up their pictures, etc as close as possible to the way they had it set up in their home.

  2. Try and schedule move in day or time when you are not in a rush because the more rushed or impatient you are, the more anxiety they will feel.

  3. Find out what activities they enjoy. If they like bingo, maybe they can go play bingo a few days prior to moving and join in so this way they will start to make new friends. You may also set a lunch day so they get a good feel of their new environment and meeting their new friends.

  4. Try and meet the new neighbors prior to move in day and let them know your loved one is about to move in. The majority of residents are very willing to help in showing your loved one the ropes of the new community. If possible, exchange phone numbers.
