As your parents/grandparents start aging, there is now a high probabil - ity that they will be at risk of falling or having an illness that will lead them into some type of hospitalization whether it’s a regular hospital or rehabilitation/ skilled nursing. Being prepared will help your loved one to a speedy recovery.
Whether they lived alone or with you, circumstances have changed and now there are many things to take into consideration prior to their release. Although the hospital will assist with obtaining a few items, here are some items and things you may want to consider prior to their arrival in your home:
Do they require a hospital bed, walker, wheelchair, canes?
Are they able to ambulate to the nearest bathroom and if not, a bed side commode with a night light to prevent falling while transferring in the middle of the night.
A baby monitor/walkie talkies while they sleep so you are able to hear them if assistance is needed (especially if you live in a two story and they are downstairs).
Make sure all decorative rugs are removed and the rugs in bathrooms are non-slip (you can test by placing foot on top and trying to move).
